450 word statement:

I truly believe that the key qualities an architect should have are problem solving and creativity. Manchester School of Architecture is certainly the place where I could develop them as the university is not only one of the best in the UK, but also in the world, ensuring me of the quality of educational environment and career prospectus. The variety of subjects offered throughout the years makes me feel confident regarding my preparation as an aspiring architect. Being one of your students would be an honour and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve my goal of becoming an architect.

The most technologically-advanced skyscraper is the famous Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Burj Khalifa looks like a stalagmite, which means it resembles vertical minerals growing from cave floors. Stalagmites usually have a shape of a cone, and so does Burj Khalifa. From the moment I first saw this building I was intrigued by the advanced technology that was used for its building and also by its uncommon shape and desing. The most impressive aspect about Burj Khalifa is that it had been planned to be a “city within the city”; which means that inside the building can be found parks, alleys, fountains.

One of the most well-known and celebrated architects of our times is Santiago Calatrava. Known for his innovative and dynamic architectural style, Santiago Calatrava has designed some of the most famous buildings in the world including the Olympics Sports Complex of Athens and the Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweden. As an architect, Calatrava is fascinated by the concept of movement in building and sculptures. He has often tried to translate this idea of the flexibility of structures into many of his projects with varied success. Santiago Calatrava amazed me by his ability to create an  overwhelming organic and modern architecture. His designs look towards the future, not just in terms of technology but also through the materials that the architect uses. Indeed, Santiago Calatrava has revolutionized the usage of concrete and steel in architecture. Calatrava also has a predilection of using the color white. This stems from the fond memories of white washed Mediterranean buildings of his childhood. This usage of white color lends a certain airiness and lightness to his structures, which combined with his organic designs, make the final buildings appear almost ethereal and other-worldly.

The Centre George Pompidou, a shelter for all forms of art and an iconic piece of architecture, would be my first choice of building I would like to experience. Created by the architectural team of Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, the Centre has a unique design mainly made of steel and glass, being the first major example of “inside-out” building in architectural history.
